Security heightened across Kashmir ahead of Pahalgam attack anniversary

In anticipation of the first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, authorities have heightened security at tourist locations throughout Kashmir. The attack, carried out by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists on April 22 of the previous year, resulted in the deaths of 26 innocent civilians.

Security agencies have been instructed to stay vigilant against any potential disruptive activities leading up to the anniversary, particularly near popular tourist destinations. Ground-level planning sessions to create a comprehensive security strategy have taken place, with senior officers recently assessing these measures.

On April 22, 2025, a horrific terrorist assault occurred at the scenic Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, claiming the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony operator. The attack, perpetrated by LeT, caused a mass departure of tourists from Jammu and Kashmir, forcing authorities to shut down nearly 50 tourist spots. Some of these locations were later reopened in stages following a security audit.

Approximately one year later, the renowned meadows of Pahalgam are once again bustling with visitors, with no one expressing regret about traveling to the ‘Mini Switzerland’ in Anantnag district, which is gradually moving past the trauma of last year’s tragedy.

To enhance tourist safety, several new measures have been implemented in the Pahalgam resort. These include background checks on service providers and vendors, such as ponywallahs, before they are allowed to interact with tourists. A unique QR code-based identification system has been launched for all tourism service providers in Pahalgam to bolster visitor security.

This system facilitates easy identification and verification of legitimate, registered service providers, including pony operators, hawkers, business owners, and external vendors. “Each service provider has undergone thorough police vetting, been registered by authorities, and issued a unique QR code containing their personal information and other relevant details,” the officials stated.
