Ruhullah’s Countdown

Yet beneath this courteous exchange lies a more fundamental question: what does the veteran leader's challenge truly represent?

In the ever-shifting landscape of Kashmir’s political theatre, few spectacles are as revealing as the delicate dance between generations of leadership. The recent exchange between Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and National Conference patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah offers a window into a political culture where personal reverence and political pragmatism exist in an uneasy embrace.

When Dr Abdullah, at 87, calls for a younger colleague’s resignation, one might interpret it as either a mentor’s stern counsel or a seasoned politician’s strategic manoeuvre. Ruhullah’s response, respectful, measured, yet tantalisingly ambiguous, suggests he understands the weight of both interpretations.

“This is not possible that I send him back empty-handed,” Ruhullah told reporters. The phrase carries the warmth of a devoted disciple, yet the politician in him knows that a resignation from the Lok Sabha would be no small offering. It is the currency of political legitimacy itself.

One must admire the delicacy with which Ruhullah handles this public test of loyalty. To openly defy the National Conference patriarch would invite accusations of ingratitude; to comply unquestioningly would raise questions about his political judgement. His promise to respond “in a few days” buys precisely the space such a complex equation demands.

Yet beneath this courteous exchange lies a more fundamental question: what does the veteran leader’s challenge truly represent? Is it genuine concern about Ruhullah’s electoral mandate, or does it signal deeper fissures within the regional party as it navigates its relationship with Delhi?

Ruhullah’s high regard for his senior colleague is well-documented and, by all accounts, genuine. But respect, as the adage goes, must be earned in both directions. The younger MP now faces the unenviable task of honouring his mentor while safeguarding his own political future, a future that may well require charting an independent course.

As Kashmir watches this drama unfold, one hopes that whatever response Ruhullah eventually delivers will serve not just personal equations but the larger cause of representative democracy in the Valley. Empty-handed or not, the people deserve leaders whose calculations extend beyond deference to encompass delivery.

The coming days will reveal whether this is a test of loyalty or a test of leadership. Perhaps, in the end, they are the same thing.
