Legendary Bollywood singer Asha Bhosle, a two-time Grammy nominee and cultural icon, has passed away at the age of 92, her son confirmed. She died on Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, where she was being treated for “extreme exhaustion” and a chest infection.
Her son, Anand Bhosle, posted on X, “My mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.”
Over a career spanning seven decades, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs in several Indian languages.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed he was “deeply saddened” by her death, while President Droupadi Murmu posted on X that her passing is “an irreparable loss to music lovers.”
Born on September 8, 1933, into a musical family, Bhosle began singing as a child alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, after their father’s death. Her death marks the end of an era in Bollywood music, with a career lasting more than eight decades and featuring over 12,000 songs.
