Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for extensive rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the coming days, with the Jammu division expected to receive heavy to very heavy downpours at certain locations and parts of Kashmir facing the likelihood of brief, intense bursts of rain.
The weather office has indicated that between August 9 and 11, most regions of the Union Territory will experience multiple spells of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms, with the precipitation likely to reach its peak intensity on August 11. Specifically, one or two spots may witness heavy to very heavy rainfall during the nighttime hours of August 11.
Authorities have been cautioned that these torrential showers and sharp, intense spells could potentially set off flash floods and landslides in susceptible areas, while also leading to water accumulation in low-lying zones. This advisory comes against the backdrop of ongoing rain-related concerns across various parts of the region.
Looking ahead to the period from August 12 to 16, the forecast predicts light rain and thundershowers at numerous places, along with the chance of brief heavy showers at a few isolated locations. Furthermore, another spell of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms is expected across many areas between August 17 and 19, which may bring brief but intense heavy rainfall to some places.
In view of the persistent risk of flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging, the weather department has strongly advised local authorities to stay on high alert and keep a close watch on vulnerable regions, particularly during periods of peak rainfall activity.
