The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Ward Officer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) in a bribery case.

According to an official press release dated October 16, 2026, the accused was posted in the Safakadal area. The CBI registered the case against the officer on October 15, 2026, following a formal complaint.

The complainant alleged that the Ward Officer had demanded a bribe of Rs. 10,000 to allow the continuation of minor renovation work at their residence.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on October 15, 2026, and successfully caught the accused red-handed as he demanded and accepted the Rs. 10,000 bribe. Following the operation, the Ward Officer was placed under arrest.

The agency noted that further investigation into the case is currently in progress.

Emphasizing its firm commitment to curbing corruption, the CBI issued a public appeal encouraging citizens in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh to come forward if they encounter corruption or face demands for bribes by public officials.

Residents can lodge complaints by visiting the Office of the CBI, ACB, Srinagar (Guest House No 6, Near MLA Hostel, M A Road, Srinagar), calling 9419900977, or sending an email to hobacsgr@cbi.gov.in.
