Wars lead to destruction, peace only way forward: Dr Farooq

National Conference President and former J&K Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday said that wars only lead to destruction and urged neighbouring countries to understand that lasting peace is the only way forward.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the renovated War Memorial at the Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) regiment at Rangreth here, Dr Farooq, recalled his childhood memories following early conflicts in the region.

“When I was a child, after the attack, the militia was formed. The militia commander was Brigadier Balamoria. I remember that time,” he said.

Dr Farooq said the militia later transformed into a full-fledged army unit and performed successfully in every field. “It is a matter of pride for us that Jammu and Kashmir has such an army which protects us and does good work for us,” he added.

Dr Farooq said he felt honoured to witness the memorial’s legacy across generations. “The first memorial was built by my father. When the second memorial was built, I came. Today, it is Allah’s blessing that my son is here as this memorial is being inaugurated,” he said.

Praying for the success of the security forces, he said, “May Allah give success to this unit in every field and save us from wars. May Allah bring peace to the whole world.”

Urging an end to hostilities, he said, “May Allah make our neighbours understand that nothing is achieved through conflict. Fighting brings destruction. It has been a long time, now let it go so we can live and prosper.”
