Police in Jammu and Kashmir have arrested more than 4,000 people in cases linked to drug trafficking since the launch of an anti-drug campaign in April, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Police have registered 3,257 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and secured 170 convictions since the launch of the Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyan, Prabhat said while addressing participants at the ‘Run for Unity’ event in Srinagar.
Authorities have attached 288 properties worth more than 1.38 billion rupees ($15.6 million) belonging to people allegedly involved in the narcotics trade, he said. Police have also seized more than 800,000 rupees in cash during the crackdown.
Prabhat said 144 people had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act, which he described as the highest number recorded by any state or union territory in the country.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the 100-day Nasha Mukt J&K campaign on April 11 to combat drug abuse across the federally administered territory.
On counter-militancy operations, Prabhat said police and other security agencies were conducting operations almost daily to thwart militant activities. He described September as a month of operational achievements.
Prabhat also highlighted increased youth participation in the annual marathon, saying it reflected their commitment to peace and a better future.
“The most important thing is that J&K has risen from darkness to light,” he said, adding that police had introduced initiatives under civic action programmes to engage young people and channel their energy into constructive activities.
