Students of the Central University of Kashmir protested on Thursday over allegations that the head of the chemistry department had harassed a female student, prompting the university administration to initiate steps for an internal inquiry.
The students, at the university’s Nunner campus in Ganderbal district, boycotted classes and laboratory sessions and demanded the removal or resignation of the head of the department (HoD).
The protesters alleged that grievances against the HoD had persisted for several months, including claims of verbal abuse during classes and harassment of a female student. The allegations have not been independently verified.
Senior university officials reached the campus as the protest continued. A university official said the administration had received a formal complaint from the students and would constitute an internal inquiry committee to examine the allegations.
The official said the university took complaints concerning student welfare and harassment seriously and that students could also approach the Internal Complaints Committee.
The Vice-Chancellor had directed that the HoD could be attached if found at fault, the official said, adding that further action would be taken in accordance with the law if the allegations were established.
The inquiry is expected to determine the facts and whether any disciplinary action is warranted.
