At least six people, among them two women, lost their lives, and three others sustained injuries after a vehicle skidded off the roadway and plunged into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Wednesday, according to official sources.
The tragic incident occurred in the Sheldhar locality of Surankote. Authorities reported that a child is among the wounded and is said to be in critical condition.
Poonch Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Sharma confirmed the mishap, stating, “A tragic accident took place this evening, leading to the immediate death of six individuals and leaving three others hurt.” He added that a prompt rescue effort was mobilized, and the injured were quickly transported to a medical facility for treatment.
District Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Pervez Khan, noted that emergency services were alerted via the Police Control Room. In response, the 108 ambulance service, along with additional ambulances and other essential emergency units, were promptly deployed to the accident site.
Hospital officials later confirmed that the bodies of the deceased—four men and two women, all believed to be between 20 and 25 years of age—were brought to the district hospital for formalities.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and chief minister Omar Abdullah have expressed pain over the loss of lives in tragic road accident in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The duo expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. They also directed district administration to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
“Pained by the loss of lives in a tragic road accident in Poonch. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured. Have directed the District Administration to ensure immediate assistance is provided to those affected,” Office of LG J&K said on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep grief over the loss of lives.

He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.
