What was Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah really like away from the public eye? How did Kashmir transform politically, culturally and socially over the decades?

In this episode of the Meeras Podcast, veteran author, historian and former Information Department officer Z.G. Mohammad shares rare first-hand memories from a lifetime spent documenting Kashmir’s history.

From his early days in journalism to working closely with Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Z.G. Mohammad reflects on some of the most defining moments in Jammu & Kashmir’s modern history. The conversation explores the 1965 constitutional changes, Sheikh Abdullah’s dismissal and return to power, the 1975 Indira-Sheikh Accord, the political climate surrounding Maqbool Bhat, the rise of militancy after 1987, the migration of Kashmiri Pandits and Muslims, the revival of Bollywood in Kashmir, Hajj administration, journalism, heritage conservation and much more.

Drawing from decades of experience in public service, writing and filmmaking, Z.G. Mohammad also discusses his acclaimed books, The Downtown Boy, Srinagar: My City, My Dreamland, and Srinagar: City of Resistance and Culture, along with his efforts to preserve Kashmir’s rich cultural and historical legacy.

Whether you’re a student, researcher, journalist or simply interested in Kashmir’s history, this conversation offers rare insights from someone who witnessed many of these events firsthand.
