A top commander of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) was killed in an ongoing anti-terror operation in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Wednesday, while security forces continued searches amid indications that another militant remains trapped in the area, police said.
The operation, which has been underway in the Chanapora area of Shopian, culminated in the killing of Zakir Ganie, a senior LeT commander, officials said.
According to officials, Ganie and another militant had been evading security forces for the past five days after being cornered during the operation.
“Ganie’s body was recovered from a cowshed along with arms and ammunition. It is a significant achievement for the security forces,” the officer said.
He said intermittent firing was heard from the area after Ganie was killed, suggesting that another terrorist is still present, prompting security forces to continue the operation.
In a post on X, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said one Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist had been “neutralised” in a joint operation carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Shopian, the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF. (KNS).
