About 77% of rural households in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency have been provided tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the government told Parliament.

Of the constituency’s 318,600 households, 244,337 have been provided with Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), Minister of State for Jal Shakti V. Somanna said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, in response to Baramulla MP Er Rashid’s query.

The government said 525 water supply schemes are currently being implemented in the constituency at an estimated cost of 2,073.50 crore rupees ($242 million). Expenditure on the schemes has so far reached 1,233.28 crore rupees.

Of the total schemes, 250 have been physically completed, while 275 remain at various stages of execution.

The remaining schemes are expected to be completed by December 2028, in line with the extended timeline of the Jal Jeevan Mission under its restructured JJM 2.0 framework, the government said.

The Union Cabinet approved an extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission until December 2028 in March, with an enhanced financial outlay and a greater focus on structural reforms in rural drinking water supply.

The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019, aims to provide piped drinking water to every rural household in the country.

Drinking water is a state subject in India, and the planning, approval, implementation and maintenance of water supply schemes are primarily the responsibility of state and union territory governments. The federal government provides financial and technical assistance.

Under the first phase of the mission, Jammu and Kashmir was allocated 18,514.25 crore rupees, of which 6,496.48 crore rupees had been drawn, according to the government.

For the 2026-27 financial year, Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated 905.74 crore rupees under JJM 2.0. A “mother sanction” of 116.06 crore rupees has so far been issued to the union territory.

The government said funds under the mission are released to states and union territories rather than directly to individual districts, with district-level allocations managed by the respective governments.
