A ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran has been announced by President Donald Trump, who stated that toll-free transit through the Strait of Hormuz will now resume.

The deal was subsequently confirmed on Sunday by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, bringing an immediate end to hostilities between the two nations.

Trump, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Sunday, stated that the agreement permits cost-free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,  a waterway that had been largely shut down since the U.S. and Israel launched an attack on Iran on December 28.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump declared: “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”

In a subsequent post, he added, “This Great Deal will bring Peace and Security to the whole Region,” while suggesting that a broader peace agreement with Iran could follow. He also wrote: “Many presidents have tried to make Peace with Iran, and all have failed before me.

The Leaders of the Region have, for the first time, found a President who can help them achieve real Peace. With the opening of the Strait upon the signing of the Deal on Friday, for purposes of mine removal, oil will flow on both ends again for the Region, and the World!”

In an interview with The New York Times,  though it is unclear whether the interview took place before or after the deal was announced, Trump warned Iran that the U.S. might resume military actions or assume the role of “the guardian of the Middle East” in return for 20 percent of the region’s revenues.
