What does Muharram mean beyond mourning? Why do Shia communities follow different traditions of matam, and how has Muharram evolved in Kashmir?

In this conversation, Aga Syed Mohammad Hadi discusses Shia history and identity in Kashmir, the significance of Muharram rituals, Sham-e-Ghariban, Zuljana and Alam, and questions surrounding Seena Zani, Zanjeer Zani and Qama Zani.

The conversation also explores sectarian groupism within the Shia community, Shia-Sunni relations, religious unity, the changing role of ulema, social media, women’s education, the responsibilities of Imams and Friday preachers, and the role religious institutions can play in addressing Kashmir’s growing social challenges.

We also discuss drug addiction, unemployment, youth frustration and the changing relationship between young Kashmiris and religious authority.

The conversation moves into politics as well, including Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, his differences with the National Conference leadership, the debate over statehood and representation, criticism surrounding Aga Syed Mohammad Hadi’s public positions, and whether religious leaders should enter active politics.

A candid conversation on faith, identity, reform, society and politics in Kashmir.
