In a decisive move to maintain public order, Sopore Police Friday booked six individuals under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for their alleged involvement in law and order disturbances and acts of vandalism during a recent student protest in the town.
The accused have been identified as Umar Akbar Hajam of Seelu, Salman Ahmed Shala of Shalpora Sopore, Altaf Ahmed Sheikh of Panzipora Tarzoo, Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar of Naseerabad Sopore, Muzammil Mushtaq Changa of Arampora Sopore, and Majid Firdous Dar of Chinkipora Sopore.
Officials said that the detained individuals were actively involved in instigating unrest, damaging public property, and disrupting peace during the protest. Their actions were deemed a serious threat to public safety and order.
Following the issuance of detention warrants by the District Magistrate, all six have been detained under PSA and shifted to District Jail Bhadarwah.
Police sources further stated that more individuals linked to the incident have been identified and are likely to face similar legal action, including detention under PSA.
Reiterating a zero-tolerance policy towards unlawful activities, Sopore Police warned that any attempt to exploit sensitive situations or disturb peace will be met with strict legal action.
The police have also appealed to the public, particularly the youth, to refrain from engaging in unlawful acts and urged parents and community leaders to guide them towards constructive activities.
Sopore Police appreciated the cooperation of citizens and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the district.
