Srinagar: The centuries-old Kumbh Mela will be revived in Kashmir this year after a gap of over eight decades, with a 10-day festival scheduled to be held in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district from July 15.

Swami Kalikananda Saraswati said the event will be organised at Shadipora from July 15 to 24, and around two to three lakh devotees are expected to participate.

“A one-day Kumbh Mela was held in Kashmir in 2016 in which about 35,000 people took part. The situation that year was such that we could not hold the event for a longer period. This time we will have a 10-day Mela,” he said.

He said the Kumbh Mela was an annual event in Kashmir till 1941, but it was stopped due to various reasons, including “interventions by external forces, including the Mughals”.

An all-religion conference will also be organised during the Mela, where people from all faiths can participate, he added.
