Enforcement Directorate has booked suspended Jammu and Kashmir police inspector Vijay Choudhary, the brother of Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, in a money laundering case linked to allegations that he amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The action follows an earlier case registered by the Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Corruption Bureau against Vijay Choudhary over allegations of possessing assets beyond his known income. The Enforcement Directorate booked him on Friday under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, alleging that he possessed several benami assets.

Vijay Choudhary is currently under suspension from the police service.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary criticised the action, describing it as “selective targeting” and saying his brother was being targeted despite his service in counter-militancy operations.

“My brother is someone who fought against militancy and has survived militant attacks,” Choudhary told reporters in Jammu after inspecting a government hospital.

He said he would not be intimidated by the case but added that matters concerning his family should be decided by the judiciary and investigating agencies.

“I have complete faith in my judiciary,” he said.

The deputy chief minister also criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of engaging in Hindu-Muslim politics after seeking Muslim votes during elections.

The Enforcement Directorate and the Anti-Corruption Bureau have not publicly commented further on the allegations against Vijay Choudhary.
